Sea Moss, also known as Irish Sea Moss or its scientific name (no one knows) called Chondrus Crisps, is a type of seaweed. It’s found along the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean between the Unites States and Europe. There are other varieties found in the Carribean waters down through the South American shore line.
Sea Moss most notably found its fame and popularity through Dr Sebi. He’s an Honduran herbalist and healer who rose to fame by helping musicians like Michael Jackson and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez (from TLC) overcome addictions to pain killers and drugs. He has cured individuals of Aids, Diabetes, Cancer, Stroke and even sickle Cell anemia. He defended his methods against the Attorney General of New York in the United States Supreme Court in 1988 after being sued (for false advertisement and practicing without a license). But after 70 of his customers presented medical evidence as proof they longer had aliments, the Judge proclaimed him NOT GUILTY on all counts. This is living proof the food & herbs we eat have a profound effect on our bodies chemistry. He is a huge promoter of seamoss and kicked off it’s popularity here in the US. Recently, it’s become a health food trend, but people have been regularly cultivating & consuming this since the 70’s.
Here’s some great videos on Dr Sebi if you want to learn more about him:

What are the Risks?
Too much Iodine can be toxic to the body (causing hyperthyroidism).
Also, all types of seafood may contain heavy metals (sea moss included). So just like when you’re buying shrimp, fish or crab, you should be mindful of where it’s sourced from and how much you’re regularly consuming. Eating too much seafood (of any kind) could be unhealthy.
I think this is a great addition to a healthy lifestyle regimen. I personally don’t eat it every day, but I freeze them and add to my smoothies once a week. You can freeze it for up to 1 year.
